Sunrise & Sunset in Cairo

Cairo winter sunrise is around 6:50 AM EET in December. In my experience, the desert air produces exceptionally clear winter mornings — the sun rises with a sharp, defined edge that you rarely see in more humid climates. The view from the Citadel of Saladin is particularly spectacular.

The Giza Plateau itself offers the classic pyramid sunset experience. I've found that the best light comes about 30 minutes before sunset when the pyramids catch warm golden tones while the desert behind them starts to cool into blue shadows. Egypt abolished DST in 2011 and maintains EET (UTC+2) year-round. In my experience, this simplifies solar planning — no more adjusting for the one-hour shift when comparing sunrise and sunset data across seasons.

The dry desert air produces clean, golden sunsets rather than the deep reds you get from humid coastal cities. I've noticed Cairo's sunsets tend toward warm amber and honey tones, especially during the dry summer months. The occasional Khamsin dust storms can create spectacular orange-tinted sunsets, though they're often too hazy for comfortable viewing.

The Nile flows roughly south to north through Cairo, so sunrise comes from the eastern desert. I've found the best Nile sunrise views from the Gezira Island area or from boats moored on the eastern bank, where you can watch the first light catch the water while the western bank stays in shadow.

At 30°N, Cairo sits at the boundary between tropical and temperate zones, producing a moderate swing of about 3.5 hours between solstices. I've noticed this is enough to create visibly different golden hour qualities across seasons — summer sunsets are more intense and longer-lasting than winter ones.
