Sunrise & Sunset in Delhi

Delhi's winter fog and smog combine to create a thick layer that blocks the sun even after it technically rises. In my experience, the calculated sunrise might be 7:00 AM but direct sunlight doesn't reach ground level until 9:30-10:00 AM. The inversion layer traps pollutants, making this worse than natural fog alone.

Delhi summer sunsets are around 7:15 PM IST in June. The extreme heat — often exceeding 45°C — creates a shimmering haze that makes the sun appear to wobble as it sets. I've found that rooftop viewpoints like those in Hauz Khas Village offer the best unobstructed western views.

Significantly — pollution particles scatter light in ways that can make sunsets appear deeper red and more dramatic than in cleaner air. In my experience, the post-Diwali period (late October) sometimes produces the most vivid sunsets, though the health trade-off isn't worth seeking them out deliberately.

The extreme temperature variation — from 45°C summers to near-freezing winters — makes the same day length feel dramatically different. I've noticed that a 13-hour summer day feels endless in the heat, while a 10-hour winter day feels compressed and short, even though the actual daylight difference isn't as extreme as higher-latitude cities.

Qutub Minar area offers excellent eastern views, especially when the fog breaks — I've watched the sun burst through in concentrated beams that illuminate the ancient tower while the modern city below stays hidden. For a clearer view, head to the Humayun's Tomb gardens where the open lawns face east.
