Sunrise & Sunset in Manila

Manila sunset stays remarkably consistent — typically between 6:00 PM and 6:15 PM PHT throughout the year. In my experience, this consistency is a huge advantage for planning evening activities. The sun drops directly into Manila Bay, creating a nightly light show that draws crowds to the waterfront.

Manila Baywalk along Roxas Boulevard is the classic choice — the wide promenade faces directly west over the bay. I've also found the rooftop bars in Makati offer elevated sunset views with the city skyline as a foreground. For something less touristy, MOA (Mall of Asia) has an open bayside area with excellent western views.

The frequent afternoon thunderstorms create dramatic cloud formations that catch sunset light in spectacular ways. I've learned to watch for clearing storms around 5 PM — when they pass through, the remaining clouds often produce the most vivid oranges, pinks, and purples I've ever seen. The humidity also scatters light into warm tones.

Because Manila sits within 15 degrees of the equator, the sun's path relative to the horizon barely shifts between seasons. I've compared this to cities at 40°N where day length swings by 5+ hours — Manila's variation is so small it's almost negligible, making solar planning effortless.

Manila Bay faces west, so sunrise comes from the opposite direction over Laguna de Bay and the eastern mountains. For sunrise viewing, head to Rizal Park or the eastern viewpoints in Antipolo, where you get elevated views of the sun rising over the Sierra Madre mountain range.
